I explained in the last story that the captain was getting angry easily... once in the Canary Islands, we began to look for another boat as we all got sick of being yelled at everyday for stupid matters. Las Palmas is the place where most of the boats stop on their way to the Caribbean so we have been walking the docks... and unfortunately could not find a boat who would take us all. While I was still wondering what to do, life finally brought the answer to me. Michel got mad at me for laughing at him... and he told me that I was out of the boat, with no prior notice! It's been really scary at the beginning but I moved my ass to talk to all the people I could meet on the docks. I got to meet really nice people from all nationalities, and even frenchies from Capbreton, close to my home town!
I left Mistral on sunday the 9th of december and while I was celebrating my last night on Mistral with George and Mike, drinking wine and eating my beloved dark chocolate on the dock, I met Henry, an awesome french guy living on the boat next door who offered me to first leave my bags on his boat, then allowed me to stay there until I find a new crew. A guy with a big heart, fun to be with, laid back and lovely. Thanks so much to him as he made it easier for me to stay around and meet people!
I am now leaving the Canary Islands in a few hours on Lola, a 36ft boat that needs to be delivered to St Martin or the British Virgin Islands. A member of the crew got off the boat and they are happy to have me on board. We are 3, Rachel the skipper, an english girl in her thirties, and Christophe, 27yrs old, french and a beginner in terms of sailing. It should be really cool. I am really excited and happy... and it will be a no cost trip, even better! I have to say I am very sad to leave George and Mike who finally stay on Mistral. We are going to leave together this afternoon and try to sail together, cool bros! Anyway, we are going to catch up in the caribbean so it's only a short term good bye!
We stayed for a week in this beautiful island and rent a car with Michel, and Chris, a really nice american guy we had met in Gibraltar and found again here. It was a beautiful day, the coast was amazing and we had lunch on a lovely place, Las Nieves, where you can see God's finger, a rock whose shape reminds that of a finger. I fell in love with this village, with houses built all in blue and white... We then headed to the mountains, whose highest summit culminates at 1949m and loved it! Really winding curves which reminded me of NZ, stunning look outs, massive rocks, cliffs, and a bit chilly too!
Las Palmas is also a surprising place. The old town is really pretty, strongly influenced by the spanish, whereas on the other side, you can find massive shopping malls and a very modern city. They even have 3 lanes highway, really busy! I did not expect this place to be so developped and built it.
This last sunday, the 10th of december, we attended a local show with canarian dances and songs, a really interesting moment.
These are the latest news, see you in 3 weeks then as we think we will arrive between Christmas and New Year's Day. It means we are going to celebrate Christmas in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, funny hey ! Merry Christmas to all of you and see you next year!
